Through the Great Divide
04:34
|
|||
I ain’t one for runnin’
But sometimes you just have got to go
Lately I’ve been all up in my head
So I’m headin’ to the road
I’m gonna drive across the country
Til I reach that gold Pacific shore
And when I round the bend
And there’s the end
I’m gonna drive a little more
Straight into the water
Where I can’t be bothered
With these thoughts of love and war
Salty sea gonna wash me clean
Of all that come before
I’ve been tryin’ so damn hard
To get her off my weary mind
It’s a rough road, achin’ and breakin’ apart
The passage through the great divide
I ain’t one for whinin’
But somehow you got to get it out
I’d rather take a hike and get me right
Than to sit around and pout
The Canyonlands, the Badlands,
The Grand Tetons, they call my name
So I pack my stuff into my truck
And I make my getaway
Straight into the sunset
I’m gonna chase it West
Til tomorrow becomes today
Give my woes to the color show
And watch them fade away
I’ve been tryin’ so damn hard…
I’ve been tryna get over
But I keep slippin’ down the mountainside
I’ve been tryna get around it all
But the valleys are so deep and wide
Now I know what I gotta do
It’s the only thing to
The passage is through this
I just gotta go through it
I’ve been tryin’ so damn hard…

I Guess
03:37
|
|
||
I slipped a fence and hopped a train
From Pennsylvania to mid-Missouri
I had a friend down at the lake
I thought I’d make the most and show up early
But I just couldn’t stay awake
And I slept all the way to Albuquerque
I guess I missed a couple states
But it isn’t what it ain’t
And it ain’t no big worry
I stuck my thumb out to the road
New Mexico got me sittin’ shotty
With a trucker and her load
Of Colombian coke, cannabis, and coffee
I said I’m headin’ to the road
And Omaha is where she brought me
I guess I really should’ve known
If you pull that kind of load
You’re probably pretty bossy
I’ve been guessin’ all my life
Sometimes it takes three lefts to make a right
And sometimes that right is wrong
But there’s a song to every story
I bought a handle and a horse
And started North from South Dakota
I had a well-planned course
And somehow ended up in Sarasota
The Gulf is beautiful for sure
But it's a poor excuse for Manitoba
I guess the lesson here in short -
Give whiskey to your horse
And you'll wind up in Florida
I've been guessin' all my life...
So as it turns out, there's a direct correlation
Between an equine's inebriation
And the speed at which he's racin’
That's how I made it to the Sunshine State
In less than half a day
So me and my pal Cadillac Jack - that's the horse
We tossed a couple rounds back
And headed to the track of course
Where he proceeded to win me
All kinds of cash, and more
Unfortunately, the liquor that we picked
Made him so damn quick
Not only did he defy all statistics
But also laws of physics
He was gently laid to rest
And after a ballistics test
It was determined that the bullet in his breast
Was the one from the starting gun
Which he had outrun
And that's when I thought to myself
I might as well take that blazing saddle
Strap it on to something else
So I crossed the state to Cape Canaveral
I rode that rocket straight to hell
And rang the bell to satan's castle
I said I guess I oughta tell ya
I'm headed to Australia
So keep your shackles
I've been guessin' all my life...

The Common Cold
03:32
|
|
||
The mind breeds a strange disease
And there's no immunity
For better or for worse
We're all carriers
We got vaccines and we got vitamins
We got needles on the ends of syringes
Pumpin' miracles of modern science
And why inconvenience you
Now you can have your meds
Baked right into your cake
And you can eat it too
But can you swallow the truth?
There's still no cure
For the common cold-hearted ways
People treatin' each other
In this cold modern day
We're all so sick and tired
That it should go without saying
Take care of each other today
Some days it's so obscene
So heavy that it brings me to my knees
Got me prayin' to a god
That I don't even believe in
I wanna stand up
I wanna make a scene
I wanna scream
But it's so goddamn hard just to breathe
When my heart continues to bleed and bleed
There may be no antidote
But I know there's a treatment
It goes - I take care of you
And you take care of me
Cuz there's no cure
For the common cold-hearted ways
People treatin' each other
In this cold modern day
We're all so sick and tired
That it should go without saying
Take care of each other today

Good Grief
04:33
|
|||
Geez Louise
Take it easy please
A little ride home
It ain't a problem
In this deep December freeze
Bad eyes
Weak knees
A plastic hip
And a lung disease
As I helped her in the car
She squeezed my arm
You remind me of my husband, Gene
God rest his sweet soul
The fire feels nice
But don't get too close
The breeze is just right
Until it really starts to blow
If you hold on tight
It's awful hard to let it go
Sweet Louise
She said you wouldn't believe
Before the cancer
Used to be a dancer
Ballet in New Orleans
What a feeling
Bein' in those shoes
It was my very favorite thing to do
But now I'm broken
Heart and body both
And I've a bad case of
Late-stage identity blues
The fire feels nice..
Louise and me
Arrived at Sherlock Street
My eyes were misty
She smiled and kissed me
On the cheek
Said ya sweet boy
You listen to me
It's alright
If you need to cry
My dear
It's good grief sometimes
Mind your keep
But keep in mind
All things fade with time
So don't you hold too tight

Down

|

Hey my friend
How you been?
Some time has passed
Since we last spoke
And I've been wonderin’
Do you still get out?
Do you still get down?
I don't mean to intrude
Or be rude or interfere
I just thought that you should hear
That I think you're worth it
You've served and you deserve some time
Cuz life sometimes
Can really take a toll on your brain
Take a bite
I can ease your mind
Let it all go
And know you are not alone
I will provide your warmth tonight
And every night
Please believe I would not leave you
High and dry
Hey it's me again
Just checkin' in
I heard you lost your job
And probably another friend
My condolences
I know how it is
Yea I know the feelin'
It's like a million little daggers in your soul
And they leave a million holes
And you cannot escape it
People say just embrace it
But how you supposed to face the fire
When it feels like
You're going insane
Take a bite
I can ease your mind
Let it all go
And know you are not alone
I will provide your warmth tonight
Respite from the storms of your life
Cuz I know you've tried
But you can't deny
I'm what you want
I'm what you need
I'm the reason why
You're still half-sane
And you're still alive
Why would you leave
What you need to survive
There's no one left to run to
Nowhere to hide
No, it's me or it's suicide
Hey my friend
How you been?
Some time has passed
Since we last spoke
And I've been wonderin’
Do you still get out?
Do you still get down?

When I was a kid I was always dreamin' big
About the things I'd have
When I was a little older
Man, I was bound to be bad
Strange the ways my mind has changed
With the passing days
What's important to me now
It just ain't the same
Cuz all those things I thought brought victory
They've all come and gone
Into a memory
After all I've owned
What do I have to show for myself?
Well if there's one thing I know
I know it's true
Time tells all fools
No matter what you have
What matters more is who
I've got everything a boy could want
Except for
I got me a car, a couple nice guitars
A bunch of records too
I got bikes and books and food to cook
And all of that's good
Couple of cats, they're gettin' a little fat
But what ya gonna do
I can't say I could blame 'em
I'd be livin' it up too
I got this place, it's got plenty of space
To spread my wings and do my thing
Until I fly away
Baby I've got time and I've got half a mind
To share it with you
And when you're mine that's what I'm gonna do
I know it's true
Time tells all fools
No matter what you have
What matters more is who
I've got everything a boy could want
Except for
I've been hustlin'
Most my keep I've earned
But there's so much I simply don't deserve
It could easily have happened differently
There but for the grace of god goes I
I ain't blind to see
Fortune smiled on me
And I'm smilin' back
But there's one thing that's been eluding me
The only thing
That means anything
I've got everything
I've got everything but you

The Ballad of Bad Luck
03:20
|
|
||
Ol' Lucius James
He had a wild life, let me tell you
Everybody used to call him Little Lucy
Now they call him Lucky Lou
It started back in '79
He bought his first Pick 5
He scratched off that line
He hit the jackpot prize
Oh yea, he won a cool million
Next day on his way to turn his ticket in
He stopped at Polly's Pub to have a drink
In walked a lady, oh she was pretty
She said, Hey I'm Lydia
And baby maybe you and I was meant to
Be together, birds of a feather
If you're the bread then I'm the butter
Better give me a try
Ooh my my, you know he did
He was red hot
Winnin' the pot
And the ladies too
*yodel*
Lucky Lou already had his fortune made
But it didn't stop there
The windfall was more like a hurricane
It just rained and rained and rained
And as he got all his wishes
People got suspicious
You know how it is when the eyes turn green
People get real, real mean
The townsfolk got pitchforks and rope
And went to get their Frankenstein
Put him in the jail, no chance for bail
Boy, you gonna do some time
The very next day though
A huge tornado
Rolled in through the town
And flattened the whole place down
That prison ain't around no more
And only one man walked away
I'll bet you know who
You can't hold a man like that
It’s just a matter of time
Til providence prevails
Til that golden goose gets loose
And then everybody’s chasin’ it to hell
Our boy Lou, he didn't get far
Before a couple of men in black suits
They picked him up in their blacked out car
And well that's about the last time
Anybody saw or heard from Lou
Who knew gettin' so lucky
Could end in such a mess
That's the Ballad of Bad Luck I guess
It's the story
Of the death and glory
Of a dream come true
*yodel*

At Sea
05:10
|
|||
I've been
Out at sea for so damn long
I'm thick-skinned
Calloused to the wind
Been ridin' currents coast to coast
I've been high, I've been low
Islands
Silhouettes as the sun sets
Behind them
Lonely on that wet horizon
Somewhere in the shadows
There's a diamond
The treasure
I've been searchin' for
It's more than pleasure
I'm becoming so sick of
Barely gettin' my feet wet
This quick love
Burns just like a cigarette
Navigating patience
Guided by the moon and constellations
So much time and so many relation-
Ships have sailed by
And oh the times we've had
But makin'
Love at sea for years
Has left a taste in
My mouth so bittersweet
And now I'm facin'
The fact that so much comes to situation
Hope is heavy
And I'm ready for
The treasure
I've been searchin' for It's more than pleasure
I'm becoming so sick of
Barely gettin' my feet wet
This quick love
Burns just like a cigarette
So good, then gone
Then sailin' on
Back out to the ocean blue
The tide has come and gone
So much it's getting harder to
Believe in
Wistful thoughts
Of my heart's destiny
When I have never seen
No rhyme or reason
Serendipity would be a guarantee
Maybe
One day I'll look back And think it crazy
To have ever doubted love
Was worth the waiting
Til that day upon these waves
I'm sailing on

What a World
04:32
|
|||
What a world
What a magical oasis
In between the outer spaces
We spinnin' like a boomerang
What a trip
What a wild and crazy story
One that started long before
We came around and laid our claim
Oh what a shame
What a beautiful disaster
All the wonders of the natural world
Ain't enough for man
What a time
What a time to be a human
What the hell we even doin' anymore
To our motherland
Lady Evolution
Looks like you really
Done yourself in this time
You really got this
Crazy train a'movin'
Headlong
We rushin' headlong into the fire
Oh what a life
What an existential penance
Just to know that my existence
Is a tax on the world at large
What a cost
What a cost of doin' business
What kind of masochism is this
A death wish upon a star
Lady Evolution
Looks like you really
Done yourself in this time
You really got this
Crazy train a'movin'
Headlong
We rushin' headlong into the fire
Oh what a world!
